For Use With Rotary Tumblers
Fill the rock tumbler barrel 3/4 full of rocks and add water to just below the surface of the rocks. Add your grit to the barrel, refer to chart below for how much grit is needed for barrel size.
Step One
Uses 60/90 Silicon Carbide Course Grit. Fill with water to just below rocks. Let This run for 7-10 Days. Open Barrel and check the stones to see if they are well rounded out now. If there are any rough edges or deep crevices still on the rocks then let run for another day or two and check them again. Once well rounded out move on to step 2.
Fully wash the rocks and the barrels out in between each step.
Step Two
Uses 120/220 Silicon Carbide Medium Grit. Fill with water to just below the rocks. Let this run for 7-10 Days. Check the rocks and they should be very smooth at this point.
Fully Wash the rocks and barrels out.
Step Three
Uses 600 Silicon Carbide Grit Pre - Polish. fill with water to just below the rocks. At This point you should have noticed that the barrel is only about have full of the rocks now from the grinding effects of the grits on the rocks. You will need to add a filler element to the barrel to bring it back to 3/4 full. You can use plastic pelets, rubber bands, or ceramic media. This will help to keep rocks from chipping now. Let Run 7-10 Days.
Fully Wash the rocks and barrels. Remove the filler u used from the rocks and save these in a zip lock bag and label them step 3. You can reuse them for future tumbling jobs in step three.
Step Four
Uses Aluminum Oxide Polish. Add your rocks to the barrel and fill with water to just below the rocks. Add your filler agent. Use new filler agent for the polish stage. Do not use the filler from step three you will contaminate the polish. Let run for 7-10 days. At the end of this cycle you should have some very high polished glossy tumbled stones.
Step Five
At times the polish can stick to the tumbled stones in very small crevices or cracks in the stones. It will look like little white lines in the stones after they are washed off. If this happens which is quite normal. After you have rinsed off the stones from step four, put them back in the barrel and place a couple table spoons of powdered laundry soap in the barrel with the water and run again for a couple hours. This will clean off all the polish.
